The 25-cent cut in fuel duties Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet approved on Wednesday to reduce prices amid the economic fallout of the Iran war came into effect immediately on Thursday when the decree containing the measure was published in the official gazette.

The cut will last for 20 days.

The decree also seeks to clamp down on speculative hikes with legal action against price gouging.

It brings in a special monitoring regime for "distortive phenomena along the fuel supply and distribution chain" involving the 'Mr.

Prezzi' price-monitoring ombudsman, the Guardia di Finanza (Italian Finance Police) and the Antitrust Authority.
