Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet on Wednesday approved a decree to reduce fuel prices amid the economic fallout of the Iran war, clamping down on speculation and helping the worst-off most.

A 20-day cut in fuel excise taxes is the main measure approved by the Cabinet meeting to combat the high cost of gasoline, government sources said.

The measure, which will benefit everyone, "absorbs" the strengthening of the social card, which would have only affected low-income earners.

It would also include aid for road haulage and fishing, and an increase in the powers of 'Mr.

Prices', the price watchdog.
