The R.S. Puram police in Coimbatore on Friday registered a case against four persons for the alleged harassment of a woman in a public place in the city late on Thursday.

The case was registered under Sections 296 (b) (sings, recites or utters any obscene song, ballad or words, in or near any public place), 126 (2) (punishment for wrongful restraint), 351 (2) (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act, based on a complaint lodged by Maya Mahajan (55) of Vadavalli.

As per the complaint lodged by Ms. Mahajan, a senior professor with an educational institution, four men shouted at her when she returned to her car parked around 50 metres off the Gurdwara on the road opposite Brookefields Mall around 9.30 p.m., claiming that her car hit theirs. As the woman tried to leave the spot in her car, the men banged on her car window and windscreen. They intercepted her car as she reached near the Gurdwara and forced her to get down. As they shouted again, she recorded their acts on her mobile phone. The men, according to her, snatched her mobile and threw it away. They also took away her car key, besides beating her. The woman managed to escape from the spot and went to R.S. Puram police station.
