Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced at a press conference Tuesday afternoon Reiner would be charged on two counts of first-degree murder, the maximum penalty for which is either life in prison without parole or the death penalty, but he said prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty. Reiner and his late ex-wife Penny Marshall were adoptive parents of actress Tracy Reiner. Nick has battled drug addiction and homelessness, and was the inspiration for his father’s 2015 film, “Being Charlie.” He is credited as a co-writer on the film, which follows an 18-year-old addict whose movie star-turned-politician father forces him to go to rehab, and Rob Reiner has said the tensions in the film matched what the Reiner family actually experienced. “When Nick would tell us that [rehab] wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son,” Rob Reiner told the Los Angeles Times following the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Nick Reiner told People in 2016 if he didn’t participate in the drug recovery programs his parents suggested, “then I had to be homeless,” stating there were “a lot of dark years there.”Who Is Nick Reiner’s Lawyer?Nick Reiner is represented by attorney Alan Jackson, multiple outlets reported Tuesday, though CNN reported it’s not clear whether Jackson was hired by the family or if he has met with Reiner yet. Jackson has represented several high-profile celebrity clients, including film producer Harvey Weinstein and actor Kevin Spacey, both of whom faced sexual assault charges. Jackson represented Weinstein during his 2022 rape trial in Los Angeles, where he argued some of Weinstein’s accusers were lying while others engaged in “consensual, transactional sex” with Weinstein to boost their careers. In one moment while cross-examining a Weinstein accuser, Jackson took off his suit jacket in the courtroom to demonstrate how long it would have taken Weinstein to get undressed, an apparent attempt to disprove the accuser’s claim that Weinstein undressed himself quickly. “I’m not going to go any further. Don’t be scared,” Jackson said to the accuser in court. Jackson recently represented Karen Read, a Massachusetts woman who earlier this year was acquitted on charges of murdering her boyfriend in a case that became a national spectacle and went viral on TikTok.What Do We Know About The Reiners’ Argument At A Holiday Party?Nick and Rob Reiner got into an argument at a Christmas party hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien in Los Angeles on Saturday night, one day before Reiner and his wife were killed, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing friends of the family. The New York Times reported the argument was a “shouting match,” citing an attendee, who added that Rob Reiner told Nick his behavior was “inappropriate.” NBC News reported at least one incident involving Nick Reiner had concerned other guests, in which he interrupted a conversation that included comedian Bill Hader, citing a source familiar with the party. When Hader told Reiner the conversation was private, Reiner appeared to stand still and stare before “storming off,” the source told NBC. Sources also told NBC Nick Reiner’s behavior made other guests uncomfortable and upset his parents, who worried about his health. The Los Angeles Times reported many fellow partygoers noticed Nick Reiner acting strangely, citing family friends, who also said he had been living in a guest house on his parents’ property and that his mother had become increasingly worried about his mental health in recent weeks. Another attendee told the New York Times Nick Reiner was hovering at the “fringes” of the party and that he and other attendees were worried about his behavior, stating Nick Reiner looked “anxious and uncomfortable,” which unsettled them. Rolling Stone reported the Reiners brought Nick to the party to “keep an eye on him,” citing unnamed sources. What Was Rob Reiner Best Known For?Reiner, son of actors Estelle and Carl Reiner, started acting in the 1960s with small roles on television and in some of his father’s movies, though he rocketed to fame with a leading role on the classic sitcom “All in the Family,” which ran for nine seasons throughout the 1970s. Reiner won two Emmy Awards for playing Michael "Meathead" Stivic, a liberal foil to his father-in-law Archie Bunker. Over the next decade, Reiner launched an acclaimed directing career, making his debut with “This Is Spinal Tap” in 1984. The movie was only a modest success in theaters, making about $6 million on a small budget, but it was widely acclaimed by critics and spawned a sequel more than four decades later, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” which is the final film Reiner directed before his death. Also in the 1980s, Reiner directed the Oscar-nominated drama “Stand By Me” (1986), fantasy film “The Princess Bride” (1987) and the influential classic romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally” (1989).
