he game of dominoes is believed to have been invented in China during the 12th century and by the 18th century had made its way to Europe. The sets were designed to represent all the possible throws of two dice and were made of everything from animal bone to ivory and bamboo — sometimes even solid gold.

Today there are professional dominoes leagues and high-stakes competitions played around the world, including the World Championship Domino Tournament, which takes place in Andalusia, Alabama, every year. The game has also spawned a sideline in domino-toppling, in which mega-runs are constructed just to be knocked over. The Guinness world record for most dominoes lined up and toppled by a group is 4,491,863.
