Premier Giorgia Meloni told parliament Monday she did not think the United States would ask to use their bases in Italy for the Iran conflict but if it did then she would only approve such use with the prior approval of parliament, as laid down in the Constitution.

"I have already said that Italy is not militarily engaged, it has not participated and is not participating, the use of the bases has not been requested, which in any case can only be used with the authorization of the government and after a parliamentary passage", Meloni, told the House during her reply after a debate on her briefing in view of this week's NATO and European Union summits.

"I believe it is unrealistic to speculate on scenarios that have not occurred, certain decisions are not taken on ideological bases.

In any case I can say that I don't think it will happen, but I can guarantee that a decision of this kind will have to go through a parliamentary passage, unlike what happened when we were not in government"
