Premier Giorgia Meloni said Thursday that Italy had not had any requests so far from the United States to use bases in Italy for attacks on Iran, adding that bilateral agreements would be respected if any are forthcoming.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to cut off trade with Spain after Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez refused to let the US use its bases to attack Iran.

"We have no requests in this regard and I want to say that we are not at war and we do not want to enter into war," Meloni told RTL 102.5 radio when asked about the use of American bases on Italian territory.

"It seems to me that everyone is adhering to the bilateral agreements.

"The Spanish spokesperson said yesterday that a bilateral agreement exists and that there will be no use of the bases outside of that agreement.
