CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – A drifting SpaceX rocket is on a collision course with the moon after launching a pair of lunar landers more than a year ago. The rocket's upper stage will unintentionally slam into the moon on Wednesday, carving out a crater and sending up a plume of dust and rubble that scientists – and skygazers – are eager to observe.

A drifting SpaceX rocket stage will crash into the Moon, creating a significant crater and dust plume.

A defunct part of a Falcon 9 rocket could slam into the moon at more than 5,000 miles per hour, according to scientists.

Abandoned spacecraft will hit with the force of three tons of TNT and leave behind a hole in the lunar surface
