A Decade-Long Driving Licence Validity Could Be a Win for South Africans

For millions of South African motorists, renewing a driver's licence has become a routine source of frustration. Long queues, system backlogs, equipment failures and administrative delays have turned what should be a simple process into an inconvenience that affects both citizens and government. That may soon change after Cabinet approved extending the validity period of certain driving licences from five years to ten years. The decision has been welcomed by Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa, who argue that the move will reduce administrative burdens while aligning South Africa more closely with international practice. However, legislative amendments are still required before the change can officially take effect.
