The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has welcomed Cabinet's approval to extend the validity of South Africa's driving licence cards for light motor vehicles from five years to 10 years, describing the decision as "long overdue" and a victory for motorists and common sense.
"This decision is almost six years overdue, but it is a victory for motorists and for common sense," OUTA CEO Wayne Duvenage said.
"The government has finally accepted that forcing motorists through an inefficient renewal system every five years wastes time and money without making our roads safer."
The organisation, which has campaigned for the change since 2020, said the move would reduce unnecessary administrative burdens while easing pressure on the country's licensing system.
