Labour insiders claim position of Ed Miliband was key transition decision

The prospect of Burnham, considered more left-leaning than Starmer, replacing the incumbent prime minister sent jitters through bond markets earlier this year.

With Rachel Reeves almost certain to be turfed out of No11, Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood are said to be vying to take over running the economy.

Burnham's first challenge will be the choice of his Cabinet team and especially his finance minister. Friction in this axis of government has brought down previous administrations.
