The declaration mandates that teams install a driver cooling system, such as a liquid-cooled vest, although drivers are not compelled to use them and may opt for a ballast penalty, a rule added in 2025 and previously applied at the Singapore and US Grand Prix last October. Nineteen-year-old Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli currently leads the championship by 41 points, having won five of the seven races held so far this season. Lewis Hamilton recently reduced Antonelli's lead by winning his first race since joining Ferrari in Barcelona, reflecting on overcoming a difficult first season with the team last year to rediscover his best form. Hamilton is also being pursued by fellow Brit George Russell, who is just nine points behind him in the standings, with both drivers having secured a race win this year ahead of upcoming races including the British Grand Prix.
