Sir Keir Starmer has announced he will resign as Prime Minister less than two years after coming to power, saying Labour had 'restored trust on the economy, defence and national security'

The PM was said to have reached the conclusion that his position was no longer tenable after talking to Cabinet colleagues, No 10 advisers, union leaders and key Labour donors.

An Opinium survey found 55 per cent of respondents believe Sir Keir should quit as Labour leader and leave Downing Street .
