Nearly nine years after a pedestrian was knocked down by a city bus on Anna Salai and later died of his injuries, a city court has sentenced the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) driver to one-year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹6,000 on him.On the night of December 4, 2017, Nomal Gogoi, 42, a native of Assam, was walking from east to west and crossing the road near the Omandurar Government Multi-Speciality Hospital on Anna Salai. At the time, an MTC bus (Route No. 221) proceeding from Kelambakkam towards Central, in the south-north direction, hit him.The bus was being driven by E. Sankaran, 32. Gogoi fell on the road and sustained severe injuries to his face and head. With the help of members of the public, he was taken in a 108 ambulance to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. He died the next day, December 5, 2017.The Triplicane Traffic Investigation Wing registered a case in connection with the accident. After completing the investigation, the police filed a final report before the 6th Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Egmore, where the trial was conducted.After completion of the trial, the court held that the charges against Sankaran were proved. The court convicted him and sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for one year and imposed a fine of ₹6,000 on him.
