The Eighth Judicial Magistrate First Class Court, Manglauru, has sentenced a car driver to one month of simple imprisonment and has imposed a penalty of ₹5,000 on finding him guilty of not providing medical assistance to two persons who were injured in a road accident. One of the injured died in the hospital later.The Magistrate of the 8th JMFC Court, P.A. Fawaz, on Thursday, sentenced Sathish, the car driver, for the offence punishable under Section 187 of the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act 1988. In default of payment of the penalty, Sathish shall undergo simple imprisonment for 10 days. The Magistrate directed Sathish to pay the penalty amount to the State.In the chargesheet, the Mangaluru East Traffic police said that on April 25, 2023, Sathish was driving his car from KPT towards Mary Hill. Around 12.10 a.m., Sathish hit a scooter that approached the Yeyyadi Junction from Barebailu. Sathish failed to stop the car and instead drove away. The scooter rider, Chetan Naika, and pillion rider Somalinga were injured. The two were admitted to a nearby hospital, where Somalinga succumbed to his injuries at around 2 a.m.The police arrested Sathish, and Police Inspector Gopalakrishna Bhat filed a chargesheet for offences punishable under Sections 279 and 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 184 of the MV Act. The JMFC Court convicted Sathish for an offence under Section 187 of the MV Act, while acquitting him of offences under provisions of the IPC. Published - June 05, 2026 08:39 pm IST
