A Chikkamagaluru court on Wednesday convicted a man accused of murder and sentenced him to seven years’ imprisonment, besides imposing a fine of ₹50,000.The convict, Kumar Naik, had murdered Sumithra Bai at Bavikere in Tarikere taluk on October 7, 2019, following an argument over a financial transaction. Lakkavalli police had investigated the case.The Second District and Sessions Court, Chikkamagaluru, convicted him under Section 304(1) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sentenced him to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment, besides imposing a fine of ₹50,000. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo six more months’ imprisonment. The court also ordered that suitable compensation be paid to the victim’s family under the Victim Compensation Scheme.Police Inspector H.S. Suresh had filed the charge sheet after the investigation. Public Prosecutor Bhavana represented the prosecution. Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar Dayama appreciated the efforts of the police team in securing the conviction.
