A Principal District and Sessions Court in Kalaburagi has sentenced a native of Rajasthan to life imprisonment for the murder of a woman and her five-month-old son during a burglary at Chittapur in 2018.The court also imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the convict.In a connected proceeding, the Juvenile Justice Board sentenced the co-accused, who was a juvenile at the time of the offence, to 10 years in jail and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on him.The convicts are Vikram Choudhary and Dinesh Choudhary, who was a juvenile when the crime was committed.According to the prosecution, the accused broke into a house in Indiranagar locality in Chittapur town on May 25, 2018, with the intent of theft.When the house owner, Nishadevi, confronted them, she was stabbed to death. Her five-month-old son, Rishi, was also killed.The accused then fled with cash after locking the house from the outside.The case was investigated by then Deputy Superintendent of Police K. Basavaraj who filed a charge-sheet under various provisions relating to murder, robbery, house trespass and destruction of evidence.Pronouncing the verdict, Principal District and Sessions Judge G.L. Lakshminarayana held that the prosecution proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt and awarded life imprisonment to Vikram Choudhary and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on him, besides passing sentences for other offences.The Juvenile Justice Board awarded 10 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the co-accused, along with punishments for other offences.The court also directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide compensation to the victim’s family.
