A tipper lorry driver on Tuesday was convicted and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment for causing the death of three persons in an autorickshaw on Tiruchi-Karur national highway in February 2024.

Pronouncing the verdict, Additional District Judge S. Gopinathan also imposed a fine of ₹3,000 on M. Velliraja, 42, the lorry driver, and acquitted the vehicle owner, S. Baskar. The triple death case was booked by Pettavaithalai police.

A police press release said S. Suseela, 65, and S. Saravanan, 40, were travelling in an autorickshaw driven by S. Arvind, 28, on Tiruchi-Karur national highway, when the driver of the tipper lorry, Velliraja, drove the vehicle at high speed and in a rash manner and collided with the autorickshaw. All three persons in the autorickshaw were killed on the spot.

The Pettaivaithalai police named Velliraja and the vehicle owner, S. Baskar, as accused in the case. The trial was held in II Additional Sessions Court at Tiruchi, the release added.
