Old Trafford is famously regarded as the “Theatre of Dreams”. Deep under those lights at one of the world’s most iconic stadiums, Aden McCarthy realised a childhood dream by playing in Europe's ultimate inter-club football competition, the UEFA Champions League.
McCarthy made his Champions League debut and completed the full 90 minutes as his Sabah FK side fell 4–0 to host Manchester United in their opening game of the league phase.
While the result stung, the experience will last a lifetime for the 22-year-old. He not only debuted in the competition and at the iconic stadium, but also shared the pitch with top-tier talent, including Bruno Fernandes, who’s the reigning EPL Player of the Season and Ballon d’Or nominee.
McCarthy’s meteoric rise has been remarkable. Just 16 months after making his professional debut for Kaizer Chiefs against Sekhukhune United at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, in May 2025, he was stepping onto the pitch in Europe’s premier club tournament.
