TRANSFER TALKPublished 31 minutes agoBESIDES being a Bafana Bafana star Thapelo Maseko lookalike, what else is known about new Kaizer Chiefs signing Adolf Mtasingwa? The Tanzanian midfielder joins Chiefs as their fourth signing, following the Bafana duo of defender Thabo Moloisane and goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, and comes after Amakhosi confirmed that they will, after all, retain second-generation superstar striker Khanyisa Mayo.Mayo initially joined Chiefs on loan from Algerian side CR Belouizdad in September last year before the Soweto giants exercised their option to sign him permanently recently. The three South Africans — Moloisane, Leaner, and Mayo — are well known on the domestic football scene.Moloisane, 27, having come through the Mamelodi Sundowns youth ranks, has been a mainstay in Stellenbosch FC’s defence since joining them in 2023. He debuted for Bafana in 2024 at the Cosafa Cup.Leaner, 28, like Moloisane, is a former Maritzburg United player. Since 2023, he has been a trusted pair of hands between the posts for Sekhukhune United, consequently making his Bafana debut in 2025.Mayo, who turns 28 on August 27, is a former SA U-17, U-19, and U-20 international. He last played for Bafana in 2022 during his time with Cape Town City, where his form earned him a move up north to Algeria. So, the question remains: who is Adolf Mtasingwa?AgeHis full name is Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko, and he is a peer to his fellow Chiefs’ signings at 27 years old. He has been a professional footballer since 2018, though he briefly spent time without a club in 2021.Professional ExperienceIn their unveiling of the player, Amakhosi highlighted that he is the first Tanzanian player to join the Naturena-based side, celebrating the fact that his arrival brings the total to 20 African countries that have represented the Glamour Boys.Prior to his Naturena arrival, Mtasingwa was captain of Dar es Salaam-based outfit Azam FC. He joined Azam in 2024 after six years in Europe, where he played for KR Reykjavík, Keflavík, and Völsungur IF in Iceland. He also played in Norway and Finland, making Scandinavia his home. To date, though, he boasts only five national team caps — a somewhat modest return for a player of Amakhosi standard.Playing StyleHis arrival could spell trouble for Durban-born midfielder Thabo Cele, who was hampered by injuries last season. With his experience of playing abroad, Mtasingwa has been identified as the man to bring much-needed composure and technical quality to the Amakhosi engine room. His preferred position is defensive midfield, but he is versatile enough to play in central midfield. He is up for a stiff competition with Cele, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Sibongiseni Mthethwa. In one publication, one of his former coaches, Adel Amrouche from Belgium, likened him to French World Cup winner Paul Pogba and praised his passing range.Overall ReviewMany players have arrived at Chiefs with rave reviews and flattering comparisons — such as Mtasingwa’s likening to Pogba — only to find the Amakhosi jersey too heavy a burden.Having only five international caps at the age of 27 suggests that Mtasingwa might be slightly overhyped. However, arriving alongside new coach Fernando da Cruz may give him the room he needs to impress without excessive pressure.Related Topics:
