A forensic examination of the body of popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis was expected Friday as investigators sought to determine the circumstances of his death and whether it was connected to a medical procedure at a private clinic in central Athens.
Two doctors arrested Thursday in connection with the case were due to appear before a prosecutor Friday. A case file has been opened against them on suspicion of fatal exposure following an investigation at the Kolonaki medical office where Mazonakis had gone to undergo plasmapheresis, a procedure in which blood plasma is separated from blood cells and replaced as medically indicated.
The autopsy, initially scheduled for Thursday, was postponed at the request of Mazonakis’ family to allow it to appoint a technical adviser to attend the procedure. Forensic pathologists Nikos Kalogrias and Konstantinos Kouvaris were due to conduct the examination, with forensic pathologist Sotiris Bouzianis representing the family.
Toxicological and histological tests are also expected and could help establish the precise cause of death and whether it was linked to events at the clinic.
Investigators are examining a discrepancy of more than three hours over Mazonakis’ arrival at the clinic. One of the doctors reportedly told authorities that he had an appointment at 4 pm and arrived about 30 minutes later. However, security camera footage reportedly shows him entering the premises shortly after 1 pm.
