An autopsy on the body of Greek pop star Giorgos Mazonakis, who died of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday afternoon after checking into an Athens clinic in Kolonaki for scheduled therapy, has been postponed until Friday morning.
The singer’s family, who requested the delay so that a technical consultant could be appointed to attend the procedure, was granted the request by the forensic doctors conducting the examination.
The autopsy is expected to provide initial indications about the circumstances of Mazonakis’ death. Toxicology and other laboratory tests are also expected to be carried out as part of the investigation.
The official account so far is that Mazonakis, 54, died of a heart attack, according to a medical statement issued by Elpis Hospital, where he was taken by ambulance from the Kolonaki clinic.
Mazonakis had either undergone, was undergoing, or preparing to undergo plasmapheresis, a procedure that filters certain components from the blood, at the clinic.
