A 48-year-old anesthesiologist was found dead in the on-call room of a public hospital in Messolonghi, western Greece, on Saturday morning.

The man was found lying on the floor, next to a bed, by a colleague who went this morning to replace him. The 48-year-old, father of an 8-year-old child, did not have any known health problems.

According to the president of the national union of public hospital workers (POEDIN), Michalis Giannakos, the anesthesiologist was on duty and had also worked the previous evening shift.

“In such cases our first thought will always be that the incident is related to work exhaustion,” he said, adding that two anesthesiologists are employed at the hospital in Messolonghi.

A post-mortem is expected to determine the cause of his death.
