Health Minister K. Muraleedharan inaugurating State-level World Suicide Prevention Day observance in Kollam on Thursday.
Stronger family bonds are essential to curb the rising trend of suicides in society, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan has said here on Thursday.He was inaugurating the State-level World Suicide Prevention Day observance at Government Medical College, Kollam. Expressing deep concern over the increasing rates of depression and suicidal tendencies among youth and IT professionals, the Minister observed that parents and children must spend quality time communicating and sharing their concerns. He also suggested implementing concepts like ‘Dinner with Parents’ in households to build stronger emotional connections. Calling for collective societal effort to tackle the issue, he added that the health department will intensify awareness campaigns and targeted interventions,The Minister also outlined plans to turn the State’s medical colleges into top-tier national institutions. “To achieve this, the government intends to update outdated staff patterns and fill doctor vacancies in emergency units to ensure round-the-clock service. Additionally, a comprehensive master plan will be developed to fully utilise the medical college land for future infrastructure expansion,” he said.The event was presided over by B.B. Gopakumar, MLA. N.K. Premachandran MP, district panchayat president R. Lathadevi, District Collector Anie Jula Thomas, Director of Medical Education Viswanathan K. V., State Chief Liaison Officer Shajahan P.
