Evacuation orders were issued in Malibu after coastal erosion opened a large sinkhole near a beachfront home reportedly owned by actor Nicolas Cage, amid heavy surf linked to the remnants of Hurricane Marie.
People living in an upmarket coastal stretch of Malibu were under an evacuation order after a giant sinkhole opened up on the driveway of a beachfront home belonging to Oscar-winning US actor Nicolas Cage.
The enormous hole appeared Tuesday as heavy surf -- brought by the after-effects of a hurricane -- pounded the exclusive coastline, which is home to some of California's wealthiest people and a host of celebrities.
Photographs of the crater, estimated to be as much as 60 feet (18 meters) wide in places, showed it contained concrete, tiles and a portable toilet that appeared to have been placed at the multi-million dollar home for use by workmen who were doing alterations.
By Tuesday evening, the sinkhole was around 25 feet deep, as waves from the churning Pacific Ocean continued to eat away at the coastline, lapping around the stanchions that support the house which the "Leaving Las Vegas" actor bought for $10.5 million.
