An oceanfront mansion in Malibu, reportedly linked to Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage, was damaged by a massive sinkhole on Tuesday morning amid coastal erosion.
Fire officials told ABC7 that crews were dispatched to the home in the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive at around 5:45 a.m. following reports of a suspected gas main break. At the scene, the driveway of Cage’s home was collapsed after erosion appeared to have washed away the ground beneath it.
The erosion broke a water line and a gas line, authorities told ABC7, leading the Southern California Gas Company to shut off the gas Tuesday morning.
“The City’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company are working to assess the situation. At this time, the City red tagged five homes (prohibited entry). The City’s Building Safety Division and Southern California Gas Company will continue to assess the situation to determine safety concerns for the surrounding area, and will provide updates as they become available,” the City of Malibu wrote on social media Tuesday.
An evacuation order was later issued by officials for the affected properties.
