When a three-year-old startup’s CEO gets private dinners at the presidential palace, you know the relationship has moved past the “just friends” stage. Mistral AI and France’s Emmanuel Macron have built the kind of partnership that most tech founders can only dream about, and it’s produced results that are hard to argue with.
The Paris-based AI company has raised roughly €6 billion in equity since its founding in April 2023, including a mammoth €3 billion Series D round in September 2026 led by Samsung. That round pushed Mistral’s valuation north of €21 billion, making it one of the most valuable startups in European history.
The Élysée connection
Arthur Mensch, who co-founded Mistral alongside Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, has enjoyed a level of government access that few startup leaders anywhere in the world can match. Macron has personally hosted Mensch at the Élysée Palace and has gone so far as to promote Mistral’s products, including its AI assistant Le Chat.
The presidential patronage hasn’t been purely symbolic. Macron has facilitated partnerships between Mistral and heavyweight corporations like Nvidia, helping the young company punch well above its weight class in a market dominated by US and Chinese tech giants.
