French AI start-up Mistral has raised €3 billion (£2.6bn), a record for a private European technology company, as it seeks to expand into capital-intensive areas such as building data centres.

The round, which gives Mistral a valuation of €21bn, was led by Samsung, in what Mistral called a further vote of confidence from the advanced manufacturing sector, following a €1.3bn investment by Dutch chip equipment maker ASML last year.

Samsung, which plans to use Mistral’s technology to improve its chip manufacturing systems, said the investment was intended to be the beginning of a long-term collaboration.
