Former school teacher, Iain Wares.
A social worker testifying in defence of convicted child sex offender and former South African teacher Iain Wares, who is also wanted by UK authorities for 90 charges relating to the alleged sexual abuse of 65 boys, has asked the court to consider a sentence that fits the criminal while an advocacy group has called for the victim to be considered.
Mitigation and aggravating factors in sentencing were heard at the Wynberg Regional Court on 4 September 2026, where 87-year-old Wares was present.
Arina Smit, a social worker, was called to the witness stand for the defence.
Wares was convicted earlier this year of indecently assaulting a former learner at Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School in 1988.
