Students taking part in the Chief Minister’s Trophy sports meet held in Palayamkottai on Wednesday.

Collectors in southern districts inaugurated the sports meet for the Chief Minister’s Trophy in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari on Wednesday.Tirunelveli District Collector Anand Mohan inaugurated the sports meet at Anna Stadium in Palayamkottai in the presence of Radhapuram MLA S.K. Christopher.Mr. Anand Mohan said the sports meet in 45 events would be organised in five categories – school students, college students, general public, differently-abled persons and the government employees.While athletics, volleyball, basketball, kabaddi, hockey and handball matches were organised at Anna Stadium, chess and ‘silambam’ was conducted at Sarah Tucker College, Palayamkottai on Wednesday. Similarly, badminton at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, carrom at MNA Abdul Rahman Higher Secondary School, cricket at St. John’s College and kho-kho at St. Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School were conducted.In all, 44,299 persons have registered their names for participating in these events.The events for the physically challenged persons will be organised from October 1 onwards at Anna Stadium and the events meant for the government employees is to be conducted on September 30.Top three winners of district level events will receive certificate with the cash prize of ₹3,000, ₹2,000 and ₹1,000 respectively and qualify for the regional and State-level meets. Winners of State-level events will get ₹1 lakh, ₹75,000 and ₹50,000 in individual events and team event winners will receive ₹75,000, ₹50,000 and ₹25,000 cash prize, Mr. Anand Mohan said.In Tenkasi, District Collector Ranjeet Singh inaugurated the events at the District Sports Complex in Paattaakurichi.“Winners of this sports meet will get preference in admission in higher education and employment,” Mr. Ranjeet Singh said.Thoothukudi District Collector Vishu Mahajan inaugurated the sports meet at VOC College grounds on Wednesday. The sports meet is being organised at 13 venues across the district, in which over 46,800 persons are participating.
