A 33-year-old Polish tourist was hospitalized in intensive care in Crete after he was found unconscious in the sea near Ierapetra, local media reported Wednesday.

The man had been vacationing with his partner at a five-star hotel in the area. According to reports, he proposed to her Tuesday evening, but she declined. He subsequently caused extensive damage to the hotel room before leaving the property.

He later went to the beach at Agios Andreas, about 2 kilometers outside Ierapetra. Local reports said he had consumed a large amount of alcohol and told his partner that he intended to take his own life.

Around midnight, customers at a nearby tavern saw him floating unconscious in the sea and alerted emergency services and the Ierapetra port authority.
