One in two Greek students complete middle school unable to perform basic mathematical reasoning, and four in 10 cannot understand simple physical phenomena or basic texts, according to the OECD’s PISA 2025 survey released this week.
Greek scores fell across all subjects compared with 2022: science dropped to 434 points, reading to 423, and math to 424 – all below OECD and EU averages, which also declined. In a new digital problem-solving category, Greek students scored 461, versus an OECD average of 500, ranking 47th among 91 countries.
Worldwide, 765,000 students representing 33 million peers across 91 countries took part; Greece had 6,858 students from 229 schools.
Kostas Dimopoulos, national PISA coordinator, said students tested in 2025 “paid a heavier cognitive price” than those who experienced the pandemic in more advanced grades.
Education Ministry called the results “mixed, but with clear signs of stabilization.”
