Greek 15-year-olds continue to perform well below the average in developed economies in mathematics, science and reading, with almost half failing to reach basic proficiency in each subject, according to the OECD’s Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025 assessment released on Tuesday.
Greece’s mathematics score fell by six points from 2022 to 2025, compared with declines of 11 points across the OECD-23 and 12 points in the 27 countries that make up the EU. Science performance fell by seven points, while reading dropped by 16 points.
Some 49.5% of Greek students scored below the basic level in mathematics, compared with 40.9% in science and 43.8% in reading.
Greek students also scored 461 points in computational problem-solving, 39 points below the OECD average, ranking Greece 47th among 91 countries.
In Greece, 6,858 students from 229 schools participated in the assessment, covering 95% of the target population (101,850 students), the highest percentage to date since 2000.
