The education minister says Slovakia may have stopped its decline, though an analyst says the evidence is not yet there.
More than a third of Slovakia’s 15-year-olds cannot understand written texts at a basic level, the latest PISA results show.
Slovak pupils scored 448 points in reading, virtually unchanged from 447 in 2022 and 13 points below the OECD average of 461, SME reported.
Some 34.4 percent failed to reach basic reading proficiency, meaning they can struggle to understand a longer text, identify its main idea or draw a conclusion from several pieces of information.
Only 3.1 percent were among the strongest readers, compared with an OECD average of 5.5 percent.
