At least 15 women were hospitalized every day in Brazil between 2008 and 2023 as a result of domestic violence, according to a study by Unifesp (Federal University of São Paulo). Researchers used artificial intelligence to analyze 90,798 hospitalizations of women aged 20 to 59 recorded in the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System, which manages hospital care in the country.
The results show that a large number of these women arrive at hospitals with multiple traumas, a condition generally associated with being struck by a vehicle or serious accidents, but which, in the case of domestic violence victims, results from attacks involving bladed weapons or sharp objects.
"It is a case of violence that arrives looking like a traffic accident, a multiple-trauma case. It is absurd," says Maria Elisabete Salvador, a professor at the Paulista School of Medicine and one of the study’s authors.
In 17.2% of cases, women aged 20 to 29 are rushed into surgery.
