One of Hellenism’s strengths in today’s world is its presence and political influence in the US.
Greek Americans have for decades played a role. One can debate how significant it has been, what changes have to be made in the way the community functions, what the contribution of Athens and Nicosia should be in planning a well thought-out strategy for the benefit of both of the US and Greece and Cyprus.
Where there is no debate is the fact that a major part of the strength is definitely the Greek American members of Congress which today number seven, four Republicans and three Democrats.
It’s a welcome and obviously helpful reality that most of the time they cooperate across party lines on issues of interest to Greece and Cyprus.
As is always the case in politics, in order to be strong and have an impact one has to be present in the centers of decision making. And to do so one has to first be elected – or in the case of our seven members of Congress reelected.
