OTE’s transition from Cosmote Telekom to Telekom moves into its next phase on Tuesday, with the launch of a new communications campaign marking the change of the commercial brand name in the Greek market. The leadership of Deutsche Telekom is also in Athens these days. German company CEO Tim Höttges and Dominique Leroy, member of the Management Board responsible for Europe, together with OTE Chairman and CEO Kostas Nebis, will meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday morning. Key issues affecting the telecommunications sector are expected to be discussed, including the regulatory framework and measures to facilitate investment. The meeting comes at a time when changes are taking shape in the sector, with PPC acting as a catalyst. The Greek power utility has already entered the telecommunications market through its fibre-optic network (Fibre to the Home – FTTH) and has also opened the door to the mobile communications market.PPC’s rolePPC said it intends to participate in the forthcoming allocation process, with the aim of developing new 5G infrastructure in Greece through PPC FiberGrid while also examining the entry of FiberGrid into the mobile communications market.Such a development could alter the balance in the mobile market, where OTE, Vodafone and Nova currently operate. Usage rights in these bands expire in 2027, and a substantial reallocation of those rights – or, even more significantly, a redistribution of the entire spectrum – would affect the current positions of the three operators and entail significant costs. The fact that the Greek state retains a 33.4% stake in PPC is also significant for the incumbent operators, particularly when the discussion concerns the allocation of a scarce public resource such as spectrum. PPC, however, has not publicly reiterated its position on whether, or how, it intends to enter the mobile market.Interest in PPC’s moves is growing steadily, as in June it signed a non-binding term sheet with Vodafone Greece for the potential creation of a 50-50 joint venture. The plan provides for the merger of PPC FiberGrid and Fiber2All, a Vodafone subsidiary, into a company that would operate exclusively in the wholesale provision of FTTH services. The transaction is expected to be completed in the coming months.OTE’s new commercial identity is gradually being rolled out across all customer touchpoints, products and services, shops and digital applications. The presence of Deutsche Telekom’s leadership in Athens is also linked to the group’s first T-Style Day, to take place on Wednesday, September 9, at OTE’s headquarters in Marousi and be broadcast worldwide to the German company’s employees.T-Style concerns the evolution of Deutsche Telekom’s corporate culture and a common way of working across its companies and teams in different markets. The key pillars set by management are Performance, a simpler and less bureaucratic way of operating (Uncorporate), and Collaboration.
