Huawei unveiled the Kirin 9050 Pro on Monday at its HUAWEI Mate XT 2 product launch event. The release marks the company’s first new Kirin chip introduced at a flagship product launch in six years.
The chip makes its debut in the HUAWEI Mate XT 2 Ultimate, Huawei’s new tri-folding smartphone, with the company saying that overall device performance has improved by 42% compared with the previous-generation Mate XTs.
According to Huawei, the Kirin 9050 Pro uses a two-layer vertical stacking architecture based on its Tao Law technology framework. The design adds vertical interconnects inside the chip to shorten signal transmission paths.
Huawei says that, without relying on conventional geometric scaling in manufacturing equipment or process nodes, the chip increases transistor density from 155 MTr/mm² to 238 MTr/mm². Its performance cores reach a peak frequency of 3.1GHz, while the area used by its high-speed global on-chip network data paths is reduced by 55%. SRAM operating frequency has also increased by more than 40%, according to the company.
On the performance side, the Kirin 9050 Pro features Huawei’s Lingxi CPU hyperthreading technology. Huawei says its peak single-core performance is 24% higher than the previous generation, while multi-core performance has increased by 52%.
