SAN DIEGO — With Aaron Judge’s imminent return to the majors, the New York Yankees are facing a roster crunch in the coming days. A tough decision was looming, but these roster moves always have a way of sorting themselves out.Trent Grisham left Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres in the third inning with right hamstring discomfort, the Yankees announced. In the top of the second inning, Grisham was caught stealing second base, which is when he initially felt tightness in the hamstring. In the bottom half of the inning, Grisham could not get to an RBI single in shallow center field off the bat of Xander Bogaerts. After the inning, the center fielder was spotted heading toward the clubhouse with a Yankees trainer.“It’s disappointing,” Grisham said after the Yankees’ 3-2 loss in 10 innings. “But that’s part of the game. We know what we’re signing up for, so hopefully it’s nothing too problematic.”Yankees manager Aaron Boone said “it seems like an injury” for Grisham, and he will undergo imaging before determining whether he needs to go on the injured list.How a 90-mile stretch could decide the World SeriesKen RosenthalGrisham missed three weeks this season with a strained right hamstring, but he said Friday night’s injury is in a different spot. Since returning July 3, he has posted a 79 wRC+. His lack of speed in center field has also become a more glaring issue since his return. Boone said he thought Bogaerts’ RBI single in center field was dropping in for a hit off the bat, but Grisham’s jump was minus-2 1/2 feet below average. With a better jump and a quicker-footed center fielder, the ball likely would have been caught.“That was my read right away,” Boone said. “I’d have to look; I think he was playing pretty deep. So, my original thought off the bat was no.”The Yankees replaced Grisham in center field with Spencer Jones, and Heliot Ramos came off the bench to play right field.Earlier this week, The Athletic wrote about Grisham’s struggles at the plate and in the field. His minus-6 Outs Above Average are the second worst among center fielders. If he’s not producing at the plate, which he hasn’t for over two months, the Yankees have to consider alternatives, even if the injury is not serious.With Grisham’s status uncertain, Jones could have an opportunity to showcase his potential ahead of the postseason. Jones had an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning off Padres closer Mason Miller, one of the toughest pitchers in the sport. Jones has a 108 wRC+ across 214 plate appearances. But his defense in the majors has been shaky, and he might become the club’s everyday center fielder if Grisham is sidelined.“I feel good defensively,” Jones said. “I think it’s just about getting reads and repetitions. But we’ll see as the days move on what’s going on.”If Grisham is placed on the IL, the Yankees could recall Jasson Domínguez or Max Schuemann from Triple A if they want another outfielder on their roster.Judge could return as soon as next week. Once he returns, whoever is recalled from the minors to fill Grisham’s spot could be sent down to make room for Judge on the roster. If the roster had remained unchanged before Judge’s return, the Yankees would have faced the possibility of demoting Jones or cutting a veteran such as Amed Rosario to make space.With Grisham dealing with another hamstring injury, however, the Yankees might avoid a challenging roster decision.
