ANAHEIM, Calif. — Depending on your metric of choice, Trent Grisham is either the worst or second-worst defensive center fielder in MLB this season. That wouldn’t be as alarming an issue if he were hitting, but he’s not doing much of that either. That’s a problem for the New York Yankees.Grisham was not the main reason the Yankees were embarrassed by the Los Angeles Angels in a 10-1 loss on Monday night, but he contributed to the whacking. In the fifth inning, Yankees reliever Michael Fulmer attempted a pickoff at second base that ricocheted off José Caballero’s glove and rolled into center field. Instead of Grisham firing the ball back into the infield to prevent Christian Moore from scoring from third base, the center fielder lobbed the ball in to no one, and Moore scored as a result.Yankees manager Aaron Boone has defended Grisham’s defense all season, stating that only a “handful of plays” have contributed to his poor numbers. This one on Monday was just a mental lapse, not because of a lack of talent.“I’m talking four, five, six maybe,” Boone said last week.
