Jasson Domínguez was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Grisham.Grisham left Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres in the third inning due to right hamstring discomfort. In the top of the second inning, he was caught stealing second base, which Grisham said is when he initially felt tightness in the hamstring. In the bottom half of the inning, Grisham could not get to an RBI single Xander Bogaerts hit into shallow center field. After the inning, he was spotted heading toward the clubhouse with a trainer.Center field has been an issue for the Yankees over the past couple of months, and there’s now runway to see whether a better alternative can emerge ahead of the postseason.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone replaced Grisham in center field with rookie Spencer Jones, who likely will take over the position in Grisham’s absence. Jones rose through the Yankees’ farm system as a center fielder but has mostly been a corner outfielder in the majors. In 57 attempts this season, Jones has registered minus-1 outs above average (OAA) as a center fielder. He has also exceeded expectations at the plate, posting a 108 wRC+ across 214 plate appearances. This will be Grisham’s second stint on the injured list this season with a strained hamstring. He missed three weeks with his original injury, but he told reporters Friday that his newest strain is in a different spot. Since returning July 3, he has posted a 79 wRC+. His lack of speed in center field has also become a more glaring issue since his return. Boone said he thought Bogaerts’ RBI single in center field was dropping in for a hit off the bat, but Grisham’s jump was minus-2 1/2 feet below average. With a better jump and a more fleet-footed center fielder, the ball likely would have been caught.Don’t expect Domínguez to remain in the majors long. Aaron Judge (rib stress fracture) could return from the IL as early as Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies. To make room on the roster, Domínguez would likely return to the minor leagues.
