Scores of firefighters, assisted by a water-dropping helicopter, brought under control a wildfire that broke out Friday evening in an open area of Athens’ Psychiko district, while authorities said several other blazes – including on the fringes of the capital and Thessaloniki – were tamed.

Sixty firefighters quickly dealt with the Psychiko blaze that started in scrub near Perseos Street, close to the Tourkovounia hills, and sent a pall of smoke drifting over the city.

Fires were still burning late Friday in forest or scrub near Thesprotiko in the western Preveza area, near the village of Vartholomio in the western Peloponnese and the village of Lesini in central Greece.

Firefighters succeeded in extinguishing several other blazes, including near Ano Peraia in the Thessaloniki area and near Anavyssos south of Athens.
