Firefighters and pilots of water-dropping aircraft on Friday strove to tame wildfires on the fringes of Greece’s two biggest cities and in about half a dozen more locations, while in some cases residents were warned to be ready to evacuate if needed.
Three water-bombers were assisting 20 firefighters battle a fire blazing through forest and farmland near Ano Peraia in the Thessaloniki area, while a scrub fire near Anavyssos south of Athens mobilised four aircraft and 75 firefighters, the Fire Service said.
Wildfires were also burning Friday afternoon in forest or scrub near the village of Gomati in the northern Halkidiki peninsula, near Thesprotiko in the western Preveza area, at Asprochoma in the Messinia region of the southern Peloponnese, near the village of Vartholomio further north and the village of Lesini in central Greece.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property, and no full evacuations were ordered.
Wildfires across Greece in recent weeks have killed seven people, and destroyed thousands of hectares of forest as well as scores of homes.
