Alan Pillay, former Mandela staffer and Mbeki aide, dies at 58.

Alan Pillay, who served in the Presidency under both Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki and later became a trusted personal assistant to Mbeki, has died at the age of 58.

Pillay’s funeral is expected to take place in Isipingo tomorrow, following his passing after a period of illness.

The Thabo Mbeki Foundation paid tribute to Pillay, describing him as a valued colleague, dear friend and an exceptional public servant who carried out his duties with humility, professionalism and integrity.

“It was with great shock and sadness that our Patron, President Thabo Mbeki, Mme Zanele Mbeki, and the rest of the Thabo Mbeki Foundation heard the news that our valued colleague and dear friend, Alan Pillay, had passed away,” the foundation said.
