Brazil’s Central Bank is negotiating to connect Pix, the country’s instant financial transfer system, to TIPS, a similar platform used in Europe. The talks are at a preliminary stage, but they are already included in the ECB’s (European Central Bank) work schedule. An ECB document obtained by Folha says studies for the connection are in the pre-investigation phase, with legal, technical, security and operational analyses expected to be completed by September.
Contacted by Folha, the ECB confirmed the contents of the document and the talks on the connection. "The document cited is indeed correct and, at the moment, there is a preliminary investigation underway exploring a possible connection between TIPS and Pix," it said. Brazil’s Central Bank did not respond to Folha’s requests for information.
Nine areas of Brazil’s Central Bank have been mobilized to establish governance guidelines and assess the compatibility of the systems. If the negotiations move forward, the expectation is to launch an operational pilot in June 2028.
