Proteas stand-in T20I captain Bjorn Fortuin has revealed there were “a couple of harsh words” shared in the dressing room after the defeat to Namibia in the opening game of the tri-series in Windhoek.

It was the second consecutive time the Proteas have lost to the hosts at the Namibia Cricket Ground after also suffering a humiliating defeat in the stadium opener last year.

While admittedly both losses were with second-string outfits, the stark truth is that the Proteas should not be losing to their south-west African neighbours regardless of the team they put out on the field.

And while the shorter format does have a way of bringing teams closer together, the gulf between the two sides is as vast as the Namib Desert, highlighted by the fact that Namibia does not even have a domestic structure of their own in comparison to South Africa’s multi-tiered system that is capped off by the lucrative Betway SA20.
