Eye donation is one of the noblest forms of donation and can help restore sight to another person, said Guruprasad, Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, KBN University.As the chief guest at the National Eye Donation Fortnight programme, organised at KBN Hospital in Kalaburagi on Tuesday (September 1), he said people should be made aware of the facilities available at the hospital. Dr. Guruprasad added that the KBN Eye Bank could be contacted at any time for eye donation.KBN Hospital Medical Superintendent Siddalinga Chengati said eye donation could bring light into another person’s life and stressed the need to create greater awareness about the importance of donating eyes. He congratulated the Department of Ophthalmology for organising the programme.Medical science teacher and emeritus professor of medicine P.S. Shankar said the National Eye Donation Fortnight programme was observed every year to create awareness about eye donation. The KBN Eye Bank functioned round the clock and remained active at all times, he said, adding that emergencies could arise at any time and the eye bank had to remain prepared to facilitate donations.Department of Ophthalmology head Sangeetha urged people to discard misconceptions and superstitions surrounding eye donation. Eyes should ideally be donated within eight hours of death, and people should spread awareness about the importance of eye donation among their friends and relatives, she said.Prizes were distributed to winners of the essay and poster presentation competitions, held as part of the programme. Students also performed a skit highlighting the importance of eye donation.KBN Hospital helped me regain my sight, says manJaved Miyan Pyare, who had lost his vision and underwent corneal replacement surgery at KBN Hospital, shared his experience at the programme.He said the surgery had helped him regain his vision and enabled him to see the world again. He thanked Dr. Abhishek Kulkarni and KBN Hospital for performing the complex surgery at a relatively low cost, considering his financial condition, adding that the treatment would have cost considerably more at another hospital.Hospital administrator Radhika, associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Sana Hussaini, and faculty members Pranesh Kulkarni, Abhishek Kulkarni, Shilpa, Wajiha, Afreen, Zeba and Amogh were present.For eye donation, contact Dr. Kulkarni by dialling 8050155550 or KBN Hospital by dialling 08472-223458/224027.
