A person’s donated eyes can help restore vision in four people using modern techniques, Government Regional Eye Hospital Superintendent and District Blindness Control Society Programme Manager Dr. V. Meenakshi said. She was speaking during an eye donation awareness programme organised as part of the 41st National Eye Donation fortnight, being observed from August 25-September 8, in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.The District Blindness Control Society and Mohsin Eye Bank jointly organised an awareness rally from Kali Mata Temple at RK Beach to the YMCA. District Medical and Health Officer Dr. P. Jagadeeswara Rao and Dr. Meenakshi flagged off the rally.Dr. Meenakshi said greater awareness was needed among the public about eye donation. She said eyes could be donated within six hours of a person’s death and that various awareness programmes would be conducted during the 15-day campaign.Eye donation counsellors distributed pamphlets to pedestrians at RK Beach and conducted an awareness programme. Participants displayed placards and raised slogans highlighting the importance of eye donation.According to the organisers, about 700 doctors, medical and nursing students, healthcare staff and representatives of hospitals and Mohsin Eye Bank participated in the rally.
