Men and women dress up in costumes for the annual Notting Hill Carnival’s street parade in London.
For London-born Sarraounia Samuels the annual Notting Hill Carnival in her neighbourhood is about “being free”.
“I was born into carnival. The (carnival) trucks would pass by our home. I was on the truck from about two years old,” she says.
Notting Hill Carnival is an annual event in Notting Hill district in London, inspired by the first ‘Caribbean Carnival’ in St Pancras Town Hall in 1959.
The documented history involves Claudia Jones’s 1959 indoor Caribbean Carnival, racial tensions and the 1966 outdoor Notting Hill event organised by Rhaune Laslett.
