Nvidia just wrote a $3.5 billion check to a company most people associate with the chips inside their budget smartphones. That company, Taiwan-based MediaTek, is now officially positioned as one of the most important players in the AI silicon race.
The investment, made through convertible bonds, represents Nvidia’s largest direct financial commitment outside the US. It’s part of a broader $3.9 billion overseas convertible bond offering from MediaTek, which also attracted participation from Alphabet.
What the deal actually involves
The partnership goes well beyond a passive financial stake. Nvidia and MediaTek are collaborating across three major domains: AI infrastructure, local and edge AI computing, and automotive platforms for AI-driven vehicles.
At the technical core sits Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion platform, which enables MediaTek to design custom AI accelerators, known as XPUs, that plug directly into Nvidia’s broader data center ecosystem.
